What is Aston-Patterning®?
Aston-Patterning® is an integrated system of
bodywork (massage), movement education, ergo-
nomics, and fitness. It was developed by Judith Aston,
pioneer in the field of movement education and
bodywork. The goals of Aston-Patterning® are to
remove unnecessary tension and holding in the body,
and to enhance body usage. Aston-Patterning® does
not try to impose an ideal bodystructure, appearance,
or way of moving to which the individual must conform.
Rather, it seeks to assist individuals in reclaiming their
most unfettered bodystructure and optimal function.
The results can include decreased pain, improved ease
of movement, and enhanced athletic performance.
Because the body, mind and spirit are interconnected,
positive changes in the body may also have a positive
effect on the person's mental and emotional well-being.
This method brings together the following components
in a way that is unified to meet the needs of each
unique individual. Therefore it is much more than a menu
of options. Depending on the focus of each session, one
or several of the following may be included:
Bodywork
Aston-Patterning® bodywork (massage) gently and effectively
releases layers of tension and rehabilitates the body’s muscle
and connective tissue. Bodywork includes Aston massage, which
addresses daily and accumulated tensions and stresses, and
Myo-kinetics, a specialized form of myofascial release, which
focuses on long-held areas of holding and adhesions in the soft
tissues. As areas of compression or holding patterns are reduced,
improved function and range of motion are achieved.
Movement education
Learning to move with ease and in optimal alignment is the
foundation for an effective and safe exercise program. It is
crucial for performing daily activities. Movement education is
also necessary to retain the gains achieved through hands-
on bodywork, by allowing the body and mind to feel and
integrate the new possibilities that have been created.
Ergonomics
The environment should be adapted to the human body, not
the other way around! By making adjustments to the physical
environment (office, car seat, exercise equipment, shoes, etc.)
we can optimize how it fits the body's structure and function.
This reduces stress on the body and keeps areas of overwork
and compensation from developing. The body can then perform
effectively, without the discomfort and limitations that can be
brought on over time by less-than-optimal engrained movement
habits. This is achieved by making informed choices in the
selection and adjustment of furniture, tools, and other objects
with which we interact regularly. The-Aston-Line® also provides
cushions to assist in this task.
Fitness
This is one of the most sophisticated fitness training programs
available. It has been developed to avoid the risk of pain and
injury often seen as a result of exercise. Emphasis is placed on
respecting each individual body structure and limitations,
maintaining appropriate alignment, and using cooperative
movement of body parts.
- Strength and toning
Muscle tone supports and stabilizes the body’s alignment.
It provides stamina for activities of daily living, improved
athletic performance, as well as improved appearance and
proportions. Aston fitness toning exercises are designed
specifically for each individual. They are performed in
proper alignment, with the best spatial design for the joints.
This technique is unique in its use of the forces of physics
(gravity and its opposite, ground reaction force) to provide
resistance while avoiding compression
and negative consequences.
- Cardiovascular endurance
Improved heart health, weight management and enhanced mood are
some of the benefits of regular cardiovascular endurance. This may
include walking, cycling, running, swimming, water exercise, stationary
machines, team sports and more! By adding optimal movement
techniques as well as safe progression to this endeavor, beginner
and experienced athletes will be able to enjoy their chosen sport safely,
and for a long time.
- Flexibility
Aston stretching and Yoga focus on stretching the soft tissues without
overstretching or compressing the joints. In addition to the physical
benefits of stretching, Yoga offers stress-management techniques and the
exploration of the mind-body connection.
- Loosening
Loosening includes gentle movements applied in a comfortable range. They
are designed to create slack and stretch around joints. The resulting release
of tension brings about improved circulation and range of motion.
Aston Facial Fitness
Just as one exercises the body to keep it fit, the face, head and neck can benefit from
this massage and exercise program. Anyone can achieve a more vibrant and healthier
face. This method not only improves the appearance of wrinkles and slackness, but it also
addresses conditions such as neck and jaw tension, congestion, and asymmetries.
Yoga
While often practiced on its own, Yoga can also be a powerful complement to an existing
fitness regimen. It can improve strength and flexibility, balance the nervous system, and
help manage stress. Bringing Aston® body mechanics to the ancient art of Yoga creates a
practice that can be tailored to the individual body.
The initial session is 90 minutes. After that, movement and fitness sessions are generally one hour. Bodywork and facial fitness sessions are typically 90 minutes.
